Appellants brought this action seeking to recover damages allegedly incurred by reason of appellees' acts of securities fraud, racketeering, failure to comply with securities registration requirements, and breach of fiduciary duty. The district court granted summary judgment for appellees, holding that most of the federal claims were time-barred and that appellants had failed to offer any evidence of a scheme or artifice to defraud.*fn1 Several months later, the court imposed sanctions on appellants and their counsel in the amount of $41,378.39 for having violated Rule 11 in their filing of a brief in opposition to appellees' motion for summary judgment.
